Rare vintage Art Deco writing desk set crafted from richly colored carved phenolic resin commonly identified by collectors as Faturan, Catalin, or Bakelite.
This exceptional desk accessory features a bold architectural Art Deco form composed of two contrasting sections. The rounded upper body displays a deep cherry-burgundy tone with hand-carved leaf decoration and a repeating geometric border. It is mounted on a beautifully molded translucent ruby-red base with strong stepped lines and a dramatic sculptural profile.
Under direct light, the material becomes intensely translucent, revealing glowing shades of ruby, cherry red, and crimson. The contrast between the darker carved body and the luminous red base gives the piece remarkable visual depth.
Good vintage condition with surface scratches, rubbing, minor marks, and normal signs of age and previous use. The underside shows expected desk wear and scratching. No major cracks or significant structural damage observed. A removable glass insert is not included. The circular recessed compartment was intended to accommodate a removable writing accessory or glass insert. The carved body and base constitute the complete assembled phenolic structure; a removable glass insert is not included.
The two sections are secured from underneath with two original-style slotted screws. Material testing produced a yellow-brown reaction consistent with vintage phenolic resin.
