Antique Chinese Opera Child Actor Headdress Embroidered Theater c1900-1950s.:
$449.99

Unusual older Chinese theatrical costume headdress featuring elaborate embroidery, metallic threadwork and numerous individually attached domed metal ornaments.

The headdress is constructed from multiple layers of purple/blue textile with extensive embroidered and couched decoration. Designs include elaborate flowers and fruit, birds, geometric and auspicious-style motifs, and a dramatic guardian or warrior-like face on one side.

The interior is particularly interesting and retains its original-looking layered textile construction, hand stitching, reinforced edges and simple fabric ties. The irregular construction and considerable wear are consistent with a functional theatrical costume piece rather than a modern decorative textile.

The actual wearable cap portion is notably small and appears sized for a child or very small performer. Although the entire decorative headdress measures approximately 12 inches across at its widest point and approximately 11 inches high, the interior head opening is considerably smaller. It therefore may have been made for a child actor or young performer in Chinese opera or another traditional theatrical performance.

Based on the materials, construction, embroidery and accumulated wear, my best estimate is that this is an early-to-mid 20th century Chinese theatrical piece, approximately 1900–1950. I have not found a maker\'s mark or documentation establishing its exact date, region, theatrical company, character or original performer. The possible child-performer attribution is based upon its unusually small wearable size and should not be considered a documented provenance.

This piece came from a larger collection of Asian, tribal and ethnographic artifacts acquired together at sale.

An unusual surviving piece of Chinese theatrical textile work with considerable visual character and evidence of age and use.

Please examine all photographs carefully. Photos show both decorated sides, interior construction, embroidery, metal ornamentation, ties, measurements and areas of wear. Sold exactly as photographed.

⭐ Provenance

This ceremonial hat was acquired from a private collection of Asian theatrical textiles and is consistent with early‑20th‑century (Probably 1900s-1950s) Chinese opera costume production, likely crafted in a regional workshop for use by a child performer portraying a noble or celestial character. The motifs, stitching, and brass embellishments align with traditional opera costume symbolism and construction techniques. From VOGT sale HOUSE Artifact Lot, 25 May 2026.
