Antique Dutch Brass & Copper Tobacco Box St. Jerome & Lion "Memory of My Father": $347.77
Antique Brass Tobacco Box Engraved Design St. Jerome and the Lion Made in The Netherlands For Your Antique Box An antique copper and brass tobacco box from the mid to late 18th century. The box, which was very common in The Netherlands and Germany in the 18th century and early 19th century has an brass lid and brass bottom with copper sides. It has engravings throughout. The top lid has two engraved scenes within two circles. One engraving depicting a man at a desk with a quill and an animal in front of him (possibly a lion) reminiscent of the scene of Saint Jerome in his study working on the Latin translation of the bible. The other depicts a woman standing next to a female angel. The brass bottom also has two circles with engraved scenes depicting a person (Saint Jerome again?) at his desk with a quill with a bird in front of him in one of the circles and an animal with horns in front of him in the other circle. The top and bottom have two additional smaller circles, one on each side of the decorated circles, with writing in them, which we cannot read. The copper sides of the box are engraved with what looks like letters but these are worn-off and unrecognizable. The inside of the lid is engraved with words "SOUVENIR DE MON PERE G. BORRENBERG" in French, which translate to "memory of my father G. Borrenberg" or "Souvenir of my father G. Borrenberg". The box is in very good condition with the hinge being intact and the lid closing tightly. The box is intact with no breaks or repairs It is relatively clean with residue of brass cleaning agent here and there and a few spots of oxidation especially on the interior. This is truly a miracle since these boxes are normally in much worse condition with broken hinges and many breaks and rust in the body as well as many repairs. A beautiful antique over 250 years old in good condition to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Uncertain but most likely in the early to mid 18th century (early to mid 1700s).Origin: Uncertain, but must likely The Netherlands.Size: Measures ~6 3/8" long, ~1 7/8" wide, and ~1 1/4" high with the lid closed. The piece weighs about 6 ounces.Maker: Unknown.Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful antique which would make a great addition to any collection.Condition: The box is in good condition with no breaks or repairs (except for possibly some excess solder which we note on the exterior along the bottom edge-See 1st photo). The engraved designs are still evident and look good. The hinge is intact and works as it should and the lid closes tightly as it should to preserve the tobacco. The box has no cracks and is relatively clean both inside and out. It does have residue of brass cleaning agent here and there and a few spots of oxidation especially on the inside. The box has a few minor scratches as well as a few minor dings, which truly do not distract from its beauty and quality. Other than that, the box has honest wear from cleaning making the engraved design less evident and the exterior has scratches and minor bumps. We believe the box would benefit from a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty. However, we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty and for additional condition information of this great piece.
