Up for sale is a stunning, museum-quality piece of authentic maritime history: an original Eli Griffiths & Sons "Tricolor" Brass Marine Bow Navigation Lantern, dating to the Edwardian era (circa 1900–1910).This is a remarkably complete and beautifully preserved specimen, perfect for serious naval antiquarians or high-end coastal decor.
Key Features & Historical Significance:
Authentic Manufacturer Hallmark: The chimney cap is clearly hand-stamped with the highly sought-after "D over L" diamond hallmark. This stands for Eli Griffiths' registered "Dagon Light" trademark, manufactured at their works in Birmingham, England.Original Native Sherwood "Wedge" Burner: The internal fuel font and burner assembly are entirely intact, featuring the premium "Wedge" locking mechanism engineered to stay secure in heavy seas. The thumbwheel is clearly stamped "SHERWOOD B'HAM", indicating it was produced locally in Birmingham by Isaac Sherwood & Son Ltd. and paired with this lantern at the factory over a century ago.Intact "Bullseye" Lenses: Features three heavy, thick magnifying glass lenses. The front lens is clear, and both the red (Port) and green (Starboard) side lenses are deeply colored and entirely free of cracks.Excellent Working Condition: The hinged rear/bottom access door swings open and closes smoothly, allowing full access to the burner assembly.Untouched Antique Patina: The heavy-gauge brass body retains its rich, naturally aged dark patina. It has deliberately not been polished, preserving its history, character, and antique value.Condition Report:This lantern is in excellent antique condition given its age and sea-going history. No major dents or structural damage. Minor superficial wear, light surface oxidation, and historical grime consistent with age. All three glass bullseye lenses are unbroken and securely seated. The burner thumbwheel turns freely. Please view all high-resolution photos carefully as they form part of the description.
