Antique English Staffordshire Spaniel Dog Rd No 542611 c1909 Edwardian 7.5\"

An early twentieth-century English Staffordshire-style mantel figure modelled as a King Charles spaniel, produced after registration of the design in 1909. The underside bears the impressed British registered-design number Rd No 542611, establishing a terminus post quem of 1909; manufacture is most appropriately placed circa 1909–1920s.

The hollow moulded ceramic body is formed on a rectangular plinth with a closed recessed underside, circular base firing vent and an additional small vent at the rear. The relatively thin-walled construction and 1.11 lb weight distinguish the figure from heavier later revival examples of comparable scale.

The modelling is particularly detailed, with a deeply feathered coat, pronounced curled tail and raised bow or ribbon at the neck. Hand-applied facial decoration defines the eyes, brows, muzzle and other features, while remnants of gilt ornament survive across portions of the raised decorative elements.

The cream-white gloss glaze remains clean and largely free from the extensive crazing seen on many related Staffordshire figures. The absence of pronounced crazing is not inconsistent with the registered 1909 design date, as glaze behaviour varies with body composition, glaze chemistry and firing conditions.

The registered number is the principal attribution evidence. No sufficiently documented factory mark has been identified, and the figure is therefore catalogued as an English Staffordshire-style registered design rather than assigned to Arthur Wood, Beswick, Kent or another specific manufacturer.
