This antique G. Grunewald Ritual Slaughter knife was custom made by hand in Konigsberg, Prussia between 1890-1914. (Required by Jewish law to be custom made) The wooden hinged presentation box is form fitted and velvet lined. The handle is made of organic bone. The blade is high carbon steel. This piece does have some age and patina.
Maker identification:Tang/bolster is stamped GRUNEWALD. G. Grunewald was a maker of surgical instruments in Königsberg, Prussia (present-day Kaliningrad), active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Examples of G. Grunewald ritual slaughter knives are held in museum collections, including The Jewish Museum in New York and the Jewish Museum Berlin. Comparable museum examples are identified as chalaf/chalif knives used in Jewish ritual slaughter (shechita).This labor-intensive piece is highly valued by Judaica collectors, as well as cutlery collectors. The box hinges are slightly loose. The box itself has some age and very minimal surface scratches, but no deep gouges. The velvet liner is intact, but a bit brittle in some spots. On either side of the handle is a small indent, not sure if it's natural since it's made of bone. Blade is intact with no heavy chunks bitten out. Maker's stamp is on tang of the piece. The piece is approx 8 2/4".
