Antique German Cabinet Photo Girl with Cat in Birdcage Berlin c1910 Unusual
Description:
An exceptionally charming and unusual antique German cabinet photograph depicting a young girl posing beside her pet cat, who has been placed inside a birdcage!
Dating to approximately 1905–1915, this delightful studio portrait shows a serious-looking little girl wearing a white dress with delicate lace details, a floral headpiece, and long flowing hair. Beside her, on a small decorative table, sits a large wooden birdcage containing a fluffy, long-haired cat!
One can only imagine the circumstances behind this wonderfully curious portrait. Perhaps the family brought the cat to the photographer’s studio in the birdcage to keep it safely contained during the sitting. Whatever the explanation, the resulting image is an irresistible glimpse into the relationship between children and their beloved pets more than a century ago.
The contrast between the solemn little girl and the cat peering through the bars makes this a particularly engaging example of early pet photography.
The photograph is mounted on its original dark cabinet card with the photographer’s imprint:
Hajek-Ringel, Photographen, Frankfurter Allee 313–14, Berlin, Germany.
An especially appealing photograph for collectors of antique cat imagery, unusual Victorian and Edwardian photographs, European cabinet cards, children’s portraits, and historical pet photography.
Measurements: Approximately 6.5 inches high by 4.25 inches wide.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning, some light surface marks and scattered spotting, and minor wear to the original mount. The image remains quite clear, with excellent detail in the girl’s costume, the unusual cage, and its feline occupant. The reverse is plain.
An original antique photograph with a wonderfully distinctive subject.
