Hard to find glazed porcelain Seder plate from Karlsbad, marked "MZ Austria," indicating that it was made between 1884 and 1909 in the MZ Porcelain factory in Karlsbad, a German-speaking town that was part of Austria prior to the First World War. (Later porcelain from Karlsbad would be marked "Czechoslovakia").
Karlsbad at that time was well-known as a spa town frequented by well-to-do Jews from Germany and all over Central and Eastern Europe, including Chasidic rebbes from all over the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires.
The plate and its compartments are beautifully decorated with gold edging and hand-painted Hebrew lettering and edging and the porcelain surface has an elegant mother of pearl glaze. The size and configuration of the plate indicate that it may have been intended as a decorative item.
The plate is in excellent condition, with minor rubbing on some of the gold edging.
