The Stereoscope appears to be an H.C. White Company device from the late 1800s / early 1900s, but the device is painted and the manufacturer marking is difficult to make out. The embossed metalwork and wooden components are characteristic of the craftsmanship of the era, reflecting the aesthetic trends and manufacturing capabilities of the time. These viewers are now sought after by collectors of antique photographic equipment and ephemera.Stereoscopes are optical instruments that create the illusion of a three-dimensional image from two-dimensional pictures. The concept dates back to the early 19th century, with Sir Charles Wheatstone developing the first practical stereoscope in 1838.
