This is a very unusual handkerchief or trinket box. I have owned it for many years and always thought it was covered in leather. When I went to list it to sell it and was looking at it very carefully I had a very hard time deciding what it is. I took it to my husband and asked him his opinion and he also said leather but again when he looked at it carefully we decided it was not. The texture of the box is very smooth so it is not pyrography or tooled leather. I think it is a wood box that is expertly painted to look like tooled leather. It is beautiful!
It is in excellent condition! There are no visible signs of wear, the brass hinges and latch are all intact and complete, the satin lining is intact with no tears or splits. The box measures 6" square and 2.5" tall.
