Lovely and rare antique, Russian Imperial commemorative chalice or goblet, circa 1912, created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the war with Napoleon of 1812.
In Imperial Russia, the 100th anniversary of the victory over Napoleon was an empire-wide celebration.
The chalice is made of brass and copper.
It features a tall brass stem and base, mounted with three detailed, high-relief copper medallions on the bowl and five smaller historical medals around the foot.
Each medallion depicts:
• The People’s Militia of 1812 Plaque: Cyrillic inscription "НАРОДНОЕ ОПОЛЧЕНІЕ 1812" (The People's Militia of 1812). The lower edge features the fine artist attribution: "СЪ МЕДАЛИ ГРАФА ТОЛСТОГО" (From the Medal designed by Count Tolstoy).
• Tsar Alexander I Portrait Plaque: a profile of Tsar Alexander I and scripture “ Б. M. Екатерина II Iмперат и Самодерж Все Росс” which probably activated and means “Екатерина II императрица и самодержица Всероссийская”
• Imperial Coat of Arms Plaque: Features the Imperial Russian Double-Headed Eagle clutching a scepter and orb, with regional crests displayed across the wings. The top arc bears the state motto "СЪ НАМИ БОГЪ" (God is With Us). The regional crests were added to the crest in the late 19thC.
• Sovereign Dynasty Base Medals: The circular five smaller inset copper portrait medals tracing successive Romanov rulers, including Catherine the Great (Екатерина II) and Paul I (Павел I), each framed by their imperial titles.
Unmarked.
Measures 8.5”H
Condition:
Good overall antique condition. Some use-related marks and scratches, minor dints and bents typical for these types of items, some wear to brass and copper. Some patina and similar metal imperfections. The chalice seems a tiny bit leaning to one side (production imperfection) but it is stable and looks beautiful.
Please study pictures closely for more details. I posted many pictures and close-ups to allow my customers to study the condition of this item.
Imperfections are consistent with age and use and are expected.
