A striking antique Indian photographic portrait depicting a distinguished turbaned gentleman standing beside an elaborately upholstered and carved chair.
The sitter is shown in full traditional formal dress, wearing a long light-coloured sherwani/achkan with finely decorated borders, fitted trousers and traditional footwear, together with an impressive wrapped turban. His formal pose and richly appointed studio setting give the photograph a strong princely India / aristocratic portrait character.
One of the most attractive features is the elaborate period chair beside him, with its richly patterned upholstery and decorative carved framework. Together with the sitter\'s ceremonial-looking attire, it creates a particularly evocative image of historical Indian studio portraiture.
There appears to be a period photographer\'s inscription/signature at the lower corner of the image, which can be seen in the detailed photographs. I have deliberately not attributed the photograph to a particular photographer because the handwriting is not sufficiently clear to make a confident identification.
The reverse retains various old handwritten inscriptions and inventory-style markings, adding further historical character.
This would make an excellent addition to a collection of Indian antique photography, princely India, Maharaja and royal memorabilia, Indian costume, ethnographic photography, colonial-era photographs or historical portraiture.
