Description
Antique, Indian sword Talwar- Tulwar, 18th century Mughal Islamic India, mounted with a 17th-century Polish Sabre blade.
Details: Slightly curved single - edged sturdy blade with a false edge – Yelmen, cut on each face with full–length shallow fuller and a short slender fuller along the back-edge. The spine, near the hilt, raised in the style characteristically for the early 17th-century Polish Sabre blades. The riccaso is deeply stamped with the two makers\' marks. The blades of this shape have all the features, including a raised spine, characteristic of the 17th-century Polish sword blades mounted in Karabela hilts and Hussar sword hilts. Many of the Polish swords were captured by Russians in 17the-18th century during the polish Russian wars as war booty, and since the European sword blades were very high-priced in the eastern markets, many of these blades were sold in the eastern markets, including the Caucasus, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and India.
Massive still hilt in typical North Indian Talwar, hilt of Aurangzebi style is comprised of a cross-guard formed with a recurved knuckle bow, a pair of quillons with swollen terminals and long shaped langets, baluster grip with disk shaped pommel (katori), with a domed top in the form of flower (phool) surmounted by the bud - shaped finial pierced in the middle with a small hole to thread a suspension string through, which wrapped around the wrist to prevent loss in combat.
