Description
Antique J. Howarth traditional carpenter’s hand boring / bradawl type tool, featuring a turned wooden T-handle and long forged steel shaft with a small pointed screw-type end.
The wooden handle is marked “J HOWARTH”.
A lovely example of an early British woodworking hand tool, suitable for a vintage tool collection, workshop display or restoration.
The long steel shaft has an unusual shaped profile and terminates in a small threaded/spiral pointed tip, designed for starting or boring small holes in timber.

History
James Howarth was an important Sheffield edge-tool and joiners’ tool manufacturer. The business dates from around 1835 and operated from Broomspring Works, Sheffield. James Howarth was later joined by his sons, with the business becoming James Howarth & Sons in 1863.
The company became known for quality Sheffield-made edge and woodworking tools and manufactured a broad range including joiners’ tools, augers, hammers and other hand tools. Howarth exhibited at major international exhibitions, including London in 1851 and 1862 and Paris in 1855, receiving awards for its products.
The Howarth name remains recognised among collectors of traditional Sheffield woodworking tools; surviving chisels, plane irons and other J. Howarth tools are collected today.
Condition
Used antique condition with age-related wear, scratches, marks, oxidation and patina to the steel. The wooden handle also shows normal wear and marks from many years of use. The J. Howarth marking remains visible.
