Antique Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito 1921 Europe Tour Japan Mint Medal Box:
$649.00

DescriptionThis is an original Japanese commemorative medal produced by the Japan Mint in 1921 (Taisho 10) to commemorate the overseas tour of Crown Prince Hirohito, who would later become Emperor Showa. In March 1921, the 20-year-old Crown Prince departed Japan aboard the warship Katori for an extensive journey through Europe. His tour included Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and other European destinations, making it one of the most important international journeys undertaken by a member of the modern Japanese Imperial Family. The obverse features a finely modeled portrait of the young Crown Prince Hirohito in formal military uniform. Around the portrait is the inscription:“Commemoration of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince’s Overseas Tour.”The reverse depicts a ship at sea surrounded by two birds and a globe-inspired composition. Above the design is the date:March 3, Taisho 10 — March 3, 1921This was the actual date on which Crown Prince Hirohito departed Yokohama for Europe. One particularly important feature is that this medal was manufactured by the Japan Mint, the official government institution responsible for producing Japanese coinage as well as medals, decorations, and other official commemorative pieces. This gives the medal a very different historical character from an ordinary privately produced souvenir. The original presentation case is also included. The case is inscribed:“Commemoration of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince’s Overseas Tour.”The survival of both the medal and its period presentation case makes this a particularly attractive piece for collectors of Japanese Imperial history, early Showa history, diplomatic history, and official Japan Mint medals. At the time of this journey, Hirohito was still Crown Prince. He would later become Emperor Showa, one of the central figures in 20th-century Japanese history.Approx. diameter: 6 cm / 2.36 in
