Presented is a beautiful Japanese woodblock print created by the most famous artist, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), and published in 1836.
This is a two-sheet spread of ohon-size prints from the book titled "Toshisen ehon shitigon ritsu" (Illustrated Anthology of Chinese Poetry, also called Illustrated Tang Poems of Seven-syllable Lines) by Hokusai.
Published by Suzanbo in 1836, these prints illustrate famous Chinese poems from the Tang Dynasty [618-907]. Hokusai's black and white woodblocks are beautifully detailed, creating lyrical and evocative settings.
This double-sheet spread shows a Chinese warrior (and Hokusai made sure he is Chinese with his clothes and no-Japanese sword) asking a yamabushi - Japanese Buddhist hermit saint - for spiritual advice. The warrior is offering the yamabushi something but it's hard to tell exactly what it is. I don't know what poem this beautiful woodblock print illustrates.
Yamabushi, known historically as "those who prostrate themselves on the mountain" or hijiri (holy men), are ascetic practitioners who lived in sacred mountains to achieve enlightenment through rigorous, syncretic training combining Shinto and Tantric Buddhism.
Beautifully constructed composition in true Hokusai masterpieces, nicely portrayed characters, and charming landscape surroundings.

The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique, with the cutting done by Hokusai himself or under his supervision.
