Offered for sale is a rare, late-19th to early-20th-century "blob top" glass bottle from the Joseph Mueller bottling works, formerly located in the Melrose section of the Bronx. This "aqua" glass bottle is a fantastic example of pre-prohibition era craftsmanship, featuring a hand-finished rim and beautiful character in the glass.
Key Features & Details:
Embossing: The front features high-relief embossing: "JOSEPH MUELLER" with a stylized central monogram. The address "393 E. 158th ST NEW YORK" is clearly visible at the base.
Volume: Embossed on the reverse heel with "12 1/2 OZ".
Closure: Includes the original, complete Lightning-style wire bail with a rare, matching Karl Hutter porcelain stopper.
Stopper Details: The top of the ceramic plug features the matching Joseph Mueller monogram. The underside is marked with the classic "PAT’D K. HUTTER FEB. 7 1893"
Glass Character: The bottle is mouth-blown (hand-finished). The mold seam stops below the lip, and the glass contains numerous "seeds" (authentic air bubbles), common in glass from this period.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks. The wire shows a natural aged patina and remains functional.
Historical Context:
A true piece of New York history, this bottle represents the height of the German-American bottling trade in the South Bronx before the neighborhood transitioned in the early 20th century.
