Antique opaline(to suggest porcelain) Largeportrait vases. This pair of late19th Century Bohemian hand painted vases are both signed by Josef Ahne,
Blown-molded from opaline-glass to suggest porcelain, each vase has a graceful baluster-shape, One is decorated with young sea nymphs with flowing hair and floating pink and red flowering lily pads. They are richly adorned in an impressionistic romantic style with a large oval reserve against green and blue ethereal water and sky with white birds/seagulls cavorting in flight, and cattails at the water's edge.
They are both bordered in metallic-gold, and finished with a vine circumscribing the base bearing tiny pink flowers and small light-brown & green leaves. There also is a metal frame around the base of both urns.
The other vase is decorated with a young boy child on the back of a sea maiden holding a sea creature, maybe an eel, seaweed and peach flowers cascading through her hair & she even has delicate earrings.Her brown eyes are beautifully innocent and her nude body is veiled by the water.Her tail is varying peach browns & soft colors of fuchsia.
We bought them 30 years ago & they were already converted into large table lamps. We have the lamp frame and harps in storage that made them into lamps. The electrical cords need replaced. BUT we dismantled the lamps and they are NOW vases.
Josef Ahne (1830-1909)
A noted Bohemian glass-painter, & born in Nový Oldřřhov. At age 11, Ahne became an apprentice to Emanuel Hess, with whom he worked until 1848. For the next three years, Ahne worked under Ignaz Ulmann in the studio of Lammel-Halzel. Ahne worked at the Allmann glass refinery between 1857 and 1860 when he opened his own studio in Steinschonau, Bohemia. Ahne was an accomplished painter, specializing in figural compositions based on German and Italian artists.
He received a medal at the Vienna Universal Exhibition of 1873, as well as a bronze medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878.
The urns themselves stand at 10"W x 10"D x 16"H.
If you desire for them to be lamps (per photo) they would measure approx 10"W x 37"H.
Please note that lamp shades are not included.
