Antique Louis Wain Postcard Love on the Tiles Cats Beagles 1910 Lovers Message:
$193.49

VERY GOOD cond - An authentic original Edwardian anthropomorphic cat postcard after a drawing by the legendary feline artist Louis Wain. Titled \"LOVE ON THE TILES.\" with the subtitle \"After drawing by Louis Wain.\" across the upper right corner, this bustling rooftop scene features several cats perched precariously on smoking chimneys and roof peaks, including a loving pair embracing on the right, a white cat staring forward from a central crest, and a prominent black-and-white cat holding up a white letter envelope. Printed in Germany as part of the highly collectible J. Beagles & Co. Ltd. Series (explicitly marked \"J. Beagles & Co., Ltd., Printers & Publishers, London, E.C. Printed in Germany. No. 915 Y.\" along the upper reverse margin), this antique chromolithograph card features a divided back layout. The reverse side features a red New South Wales one penny stamp cancelled by a clear, bold duplex postmark from Culcairn, N.S.W. dated July 11, 1910. The card is addressed in ink to \"Miss B. M. Robberds, Telarah, Prospect Rd, Summer Hill.\" The top margin bears an additional brief note reading \"Give my love to Aunties.\" The main section contains a heavily penned, highly amusing and teasing period message from Gracie Chapman that directly comments on the romantic illustration on the front: \"Dear Gwen Blanche, What about riding. I have been out nearly every day since your photos. I did not know you were in love but I can see it without you telling me by the photos look at the P.C. I have drawn a line round you & your lover. It is lovely up here there is only one fault that is the stay is not long enough. Frank came in yesterday for a couple of hours. With love from Gracie Chapman\". True to the message, the sender has drawn a distinct, pencil circle on the front artwork around the embracing cat couple on the right chimney stack. This exceptional piece of early 20th-century cat art ephemera remains in clean antique condition with bright color rendering, light age-related handling wear, and a superb local Australian postal history layout - see scans of both sides. If you are collecting Antique or Vintage postcards for their future value, then beware of reproductions, as only GENUINE ORIGINAL ones like ours will substantially increase in value!
