Great antique Marshall Field\'s cigar box. For decades, Marshall Field\'s had a renowned tobacco department, selling all manner of items for the enthusiast. From 1900 through WW1, a good quality cigar would cost around 2 cents, jumping in the early 1920s to the 5 cent cost that was maintained through the mid 1930s as more automation reduced the cost of the cigar, as well as competition from cigarettes. That pricing would place this box as pre-1925, as Field would never be choose to be the value brand. Notice there isn\'t a price break on buying five of these cigars, they are still a dime!
Box features the Marshall Field portrait and crests inside the lid, a smaller version of the portrait is on both ends of the box. Left end has a space for to enter text, the right end has an applied strip that states \"The Customer is Always Right\" When He Asks for Marshall Field Cigars. The front of the box is stamped Bouquet, and has a tax and price notice, there is a larger tax stamp on the bottom of the box. I am not sure if bouquet refers to the style of cigar, the one with the tapered end, or if they are referring to the actual aroma.
The lid of the box has the gold and black Superior Quality label. See images for a couple of areas where the paper is raised. Box is a light wood construction, covered with paper. There is a small nail hole in just below the R in superior where the box was once nailed shut.
Box measures approximately 9.25\" X 5\" X 2.25\" high. Overall condition is good, there are signs of age There is some paper trim loss on the top of the lid, upper left - near the buckled paper, there is some spotting inside the box. Box is tight and sturdy. See photos for details. A great addition to a historical Marshal Field collection, or anyone who enjoys antique tobacco memorabilia.
