An antique Loyal Orange Lodge collarette, the shoulder regalia worn by members of the Orange Institution, numbered to LOL 164. Orange moire silk faced over a purple ground, edged in silver braid and finished all round with heavy silver bullion fringe.MAKERThe lining carries the original woven label: MADE BY ROBERT BRIDGETT, 666 GOVAN RD, GLASGOW. A Glasgow-made piece rather than an Ulster one, which is worth noting since most surviving collarettes on the market are Northern Irish.THE EMBLEMS — eleven in nickel-plated white metal, all presentLeft panel, top to bottom: crown; the letters LOL; the arch; King William III mounted, on a plaque dated 1690; Jacob's ladder; the letter S.Right panel, top to bottom: open Bible; the numerals 164; three-branch candelabra; the brazen serpent on its pole; coffin; the letter M.These are the traditional emblems of the Orange and Royal Arch Purple degrees, and a full set on one collarette is not that common — most examples that turn up have lost several.CONDITIONSee the condition note above for the detail. The short version: emblems all present and tight, silk lightly soiled with some small age spots, and the bullion fringe tangled with loose and broken strands and darkened at the points.
