Broadway above 17th St. New York City, ca. 1903. Original sepia photograph ca. 6 ½” x 4 ¾” on a mount ca. 9” x 7”. Mount labeled on the back in ink by two different hands, “Broadway above 17th St., New York City” and “William G (?) Le Roy.”
Wonderfully detailed antique view of NYC’s famed Broadway from Union Square with many beautifully composed details, including at its center a street railway switchman (or switch tender) with two street cars lined-up behind him. Also shown are many famed Broadway businesses, including on the roofline at left DeYoungs Portrait Studio and below Drake Business School in the building they shared from 1903, while next door on Broadway is the façade of Errico Bros., importers of Italian art and antiquities. Across the street is the wide storefront of Thonet Austrian Bent Wood Furniture with William B. Kerr & Co., Silversmiths, above, both located at 860 Broadway. I find no record of a photographer named William Le Roy, so if he was the artist this may be the only extant copy of a fascinating work preserving details of a bygone era in New York City.
