This antique porcelain cabinet plate features a hand-painted scene inspired by Jean-François Millet's famous 1857 oil painting,"The Gleaners"
  • Design:It features a scalloped edge with a heavyfiligree goldoverlay on a deepburgundy (or chestnut) rim.
  • Central Scene:The artwork depicts three peasant women "gleaning" a field—collecting the scraps of wheat left over after the harvest.

  • The presence of aRoyal Viennabackstamp alongside theMignon Z.S. & Co. Bavariamark on your porcelain plate iscommon for decorative items produced by the German companyZeh, Scherzer & Co.(Z.S. & Co.) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
    Why Both Marks Are Present
    • The Manufacturer:The green backstamp in your image belongs toPorzellanfabrik Zeh, Scherzer & Co., founded in 1880 in Rehau, Bavaria. The "Mignon" line was one of their most successful collections.
    • The "Royal Vienna" Style:Z.S. & Co. often produced porcelain in the "Royal Vienna style," which featured intricate portraits, elaborate gold gilding, and romantic scenes. After the original Imperial State Manufactory Vienna closed in 1864, many other European factories adopted the name and its famous "beehive" (or shield) mark to signify pieces decorated in this prestigious style.
    • Secondary Decoration:In many cases, Z.S. & Co. provided the porcelain "blanks," while a secondary studio added the high-end hand-painted portraits and gold embellishments associated with Royal Vienna, sometimes adding a "beehive" mark to the back at that stage.
Dating Your PieceThe specific green mark shown in your image—with the company name and "BAVARIA" separated by a wavy line—was used by Z.S. & Co. between1880 and 1918.Keep in mind the shipping price also covers handling fees, packaging materials & time, not just postage.
