A striking antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saints Zosima and Savvaty, revered founders of the Solovetsky Monastery.
The two saints are depicted standing on either side of the Solovetsky Monastery, a traditional composition associated with these important saints of the Russian Orthodox Church.
According to the original Japanese seller, this icon is attributed broadly to the 17th–19th century period and is painted on a wooden panel.
The heavily aged painted surface, darkened colors, losses and exposed areas of the wooden panel give the piece a powerful antique character and presence.
It is currently presented in a substantial decorative frame, making it particularly impressive as a display piece.
