This is an authentic, turn-of-the-century antique Eastern Orthodox travel icon depicting Our Lady of Smolenskaya (The Hodegetria / Mother of God of Smolensk).This historic piece features the classic iconographic composition where the Virgin Mary points her hand toward the Christ Child, who holds a sacred scroll and offers a blessing.
This icon is an excellent example of late-Imperial Russian religious folk art. It is constructed with a finely detailed lithograph depiction of the faces and hands, overlaid with an ornate, stamped brass foil cover (Oklad or Riza). The brass cover features embossed detailing forming the halos, borders, and traditional fabric folds of the robes.Church Slavonic abbreviations for the Mother of God (МР ѲУ) and Jesus Christ (ІС ХС) are cleanly embossed into the upper corners.
