Available for purchase is a RARE porcelain figural nip bottle made by Schafer & Vater in Volkstedt-Rudolstadt, Germany during the 1910s or early 1920s. Schafer & Vater was founded in 1890 and was best known for manufacturing whimsical and comical figurines, match holders, flasks, creamers, and other porcelain items. This bottle depicts a whimsical gentleman wearing a nightshirt and nightcap. He is holding up his right index finger and holding a shot glass in his other hand, ready for a "nightcap" of liquor before going to bed. The front of his cap is inscribed "Prosit!", a German drinking toast meaning "cheers" or "may it do you good". Small bottles like this one were widely produced in Germany before and during Prohibition, designed to be discreetly carried or hidden, holding just enough liquor for a quick "nip".This figural bottle stands about 7 1/4" tall and measures approximately 3 1/4" wide and 3 1/4" deep. The "Prosit!" bottle was made in 3 sizes (6", 7 1/4", 10"), with this one being the middle size. The bottle has its original nightcap stopper. The underside of the base is marked with the Schafer & Vater crown and star logo containing the letter "R" (for Rudolstadt). I purchased this bottle at a recent estate sale, along with several other Schafer & Vater items (please see my other listings). This piece is guaranteed to be an antique Schafer & Vater bottle from the early 20th century. Please check my positive response and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.Condition of this figural Schafer & Vater nip bottle is generally VERY GOOD.Upon very close examination, the finger appears to have been repaired. No otherchips, cracks, repairs, or crazing. The stopper and cork are intact (cork is slightly loose in stopper). Overall, this whimsical bottle looks fantastic and displays beautifully.
