Vintage antique machinery
The notion was/is that one would take a reading of a properly operating machine to get a baseline. Thereafter, the amplitude of vibration would be periodically checked, mainly to spot problems (such as bearing failure) a bit before actual failure. Largely supplanted by devices that can distinguish the actual amplitude and frequency of vibration.
