Antique Stereoview by N. D. Morgan, 166 Main Street, Norwich, Connecticut: Church Interior Decorated with Flowers, c. 1870s-1880s
This is a Victorian stereoview of a church interior in Norwich, Connecticut, taken by local photographer N. D. Morgan. The chancel is heavily decorated: flowers are banked at the pulpit, a floral cross stands on a stand at the right, and vines and potted plants hang from the ornate chandelier and wall sconces. The arched apse behind has stenciled and molded decoration, and the pews and platform chairs are visible in the foreground. Interior views are much scarcer than exteriors, and this one has good depth and a great deal of period detail. It should appeal to collectors of Connecticut and New England local history, church and religious ephemera, and Victorian interiors.
Format note: Yellow curved-top stereoview card, approx. 7\" x 3.5\", with two albumen photographs mounted side by side for use in a stereoscope. There is no printed caption on the front.
Photographer: The mount is printed in orange with \"N. D. Morgan,\" on the right edge and \"166 Main Street, Norwich, Conn.\" on the left. The reverse is blank. I can\'t identify the church from the card, and the decoration could mark Easter, another holiday, or another special occasion.
Inscription: No handwriting, names, or collector marks.
Condition: expected wear to edges and corners. Some foxing to image.
