Antique Victorian Joseph Rodgers & Sons Sheffield Bread Knife
Queen Victoria VR Mark - Cutlers to Her Majesty - Carved Wood Handle
A wonderful surviving example of 19th-century Sheffield cutlery, this antique bread knife was made by Joseph Rodgers & Sons of Sheffield, England, one of the most celebrated names in British cutlery.
What makes this knife particularly interesting is the remarkable collection of original Victorian markings that remain visible on the blade.
The blade is stamped:

CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY
Above the maker's name appears the VR royal cypher, representing Victoria Regina, or Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, placing this knife firmly within the Victorian era.
The blade also retains an especially attractive period decorative cartouche, meaning an ornamental framed design surrounding an inscription. Within this elaborate decoration appear the words:

These markings are an important part of the knife's appeal. Rather than simply identifying its function, Joseph Rodgers & Sons decorated and promoted the blade itself, giving us a wonderful glimpse into the craftsmanship and merchandising of fine Sheffield cutlery during the Victorian period.
The substantial wooden handle is equally distinctive. One side is boldly carved in raised letters:
BREAD
The lettering is surrounded by additional hand-finished decorative carving. The reverse side has a simpler incised decorative pattern. The wood has developed an attractive warm patina from age and use.
Age and Origin
Based upon the Joseph Rodgers & Sons, Cutlers to Her Majesty, and VR markings, this knife dates from the reign of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901. We conservatively describe it as a Victorian bread knife from the latter half of the 19th century.

Condition
The knife is in very nice antique condition for its considerable age and original utilitarian purpose.
The carved wooden handle remains intact and displays an attractive age-appropriate patina, with the large BREAD lettering and surrounding decoration particularly well preserved.
The carbon-steel blade displays the expected evidence of more than a century of age and use, including scratches, darkening, oxidation, scattered spotting and areas of surface pitting. Most importantly, the Joseph Rodgers & Sons maker's mark, "Cutlers to Her Majesty" inscription, VR royal cypher, and decorative "Bread Knife / Superior Quality / Always Ready" cartouche remain visible and legible.
The knife has not been aggressively polished or restored, allowing it to retain the character and patina appropriate to an authentic Victorian piece.
