Antique/Vintage Japanese Woodblock Print by Kitagawa Utamaro -Moral Spectacles-Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, re-cut and reprinted in the 1960s by Yuyudo Publishing house.Kitagawa Utamaro was born in 1753 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and passed away in 1806. He is revered as one of the foremost Japanese printmakers and painters, renowned for his portrayals of bijin (beautiful women).
Utamaro’s portrayals of women exhibit a sensitivity unmatched by his predecessors among ukiyo-e artists. His work was widely reproduced during the 19th and 20th centuries. The print is part of a series titled "A Parent's Moralizing Spectacles." Another way of translating it is "Moral Instructions Seen from Parents' Eye". You can see the spectacles in the upper-right corner. In this series, Utamaro creates portraits of beautiful women, accompanied by comments that explain their good and bad qualities. The print's title is "Lazy," and it depicts a beautiful woman holding a rice bowl, with a towel draped over her shoulder. Apparently, she is supposed to wash the rice bowl but is too lazy to do it. There are some detailed explanations next to the glasses.Utamaro is known for creating interesting and unusual situations and reasons for presenting his portraits of perfect beauties. The seal in the lower-left corner is the original publisher's seal and belongs to Tsuruya Kiemon, a well-established publisher in the late 1700s-early 1800s. It was replicated by Yuyudo. This is a woodblock print created using the traditional Japanese woodblock technique by one of the best Japanese publishers, Yuyudo Publishing. In the 1950's, as interest in Edo-era woodblock prints was reigniting, Yuyudo embarked upon a project to produce reprints by the great masters from the Golden Age of Ukiyo-e. They hired the finest woodblock printers and carvers in the world for this endeavor. The resulting prints were among the highest-quality reproductions ever made.
