Antique Vtg Swiss Carved Wood Black Forest Bellhop Monkey Nutcracker Glass Eyes For Sale

Up for sale is an absolutely fabulous piece of antique European folk art—a hand-carved Black Forest figural nutcracker shaped like a charming monkey or chimpanzee. He has an incredible presence, and it won’t take you long to fall in love with his expressive face and realistic amber glass eyes! I have only owned him a short time, and I am genuinely going to miss having him in my collection.

The Black Forest region of Germany and Switzerland became world-renowned in the 19th and early 20th centuries for its master woodcarvers. While they are famous for cuckoo clocks and bears, carvers also delighted in creating whimsical, mechanical everyday items like this lever-action nutcracker. Zoomorphic (animal-shaped) designs—especially monkeys—were highly prized for their clever utility, as the animal's opening jaw naturally mimics the cracking action.

Design & Details

This little guy is beautifully detailed, featuring finely textured fur and a distinctively carved cap resembling a traditional Fez or a vintage pillbox/bellhop-style hat. He is carved from a dense, rich hardwood (likely walnut) that has developed a gorgeous, warm patina over the last century.

• Width: 3 inches (at the widest point)

• Thickness: 2 inches

• Weight: 6 ounces

• He is in very nice antique condition! The lever mechanism moves smoothly and holds tight. There is some minor wear or potential tiny chips on the tops of his ears; however, because of the hand-carved nature of the piece, this may simply be part of the original tool markings and texture from the artisan's chisel. Please review the high-resolution photos to judge the character and condition for yourself.
