Beautiful antique Ward-Stilson Co. Automatic Harp No. 9584, manufactured in Anderson, Indiana and dating to the early 20th century, likely circa 1910s–1920s.
This unusual mechanical harp contains a wind-up music-box mechanism. It is working: after winding, moving the control lever starts the music and moving it back stops it. It will play for several minutes from a winding.
The dark wood body features an elegant gilt-tone foliate decoration on the front and the original interior paper label reading “AUTOMATIC HARP No. 9584 – Manuf’d by The Ward-Stilson Co., Anderson, Ind. – Patent Applied For.”
The back, sides and base present very nicely for its age. The front has age-related wear including some scuffing and areas of milky white finish haze/clouding, particularly around the decorative area and upper portion. I am not a professional antique wood conservator and have intentionally not attempted aggressive cleaning or restoration that could damage the original finish. A knowledgeable buyer may choose to have the finish professionally conserved.
Despite its age, the musical mechanism still plays, which gives this piece tremendous character. An impressive piece of early mechanical music, fraternal history and American decorative craftsmanship.
