Female Face Mask (Mfon) from Anang, Nigeria
Use in key masquerade performances that take place after theyam harvest, this type of mask is considered to mark the visit among humans ofthe ancestral spirits (Ekpo).
It originated from Uto Etim Ekpo in the southwestern Anang regionand was noted to be made in the 1920s or 1930s by one of Akpan Chukwu’s (famouscarver) assistants or pupils since the piece does not contain his signature.

Upon moving to Detroit for business in theearly 2000s, we quickly immersed ourselves in the local art community. One ofthe first people we met was Dr. Cledie Taylor and a brief introductionblossomed into years of profound mentoring and friendship. After visiting ourhome to view our collection of African and African American art, she graciouslyagreed to curate and appraise a portion of our extensive collection that totalmore than 1,000 pieces. Dr. Taylor helped us form partnerships with theCharles H. Wright A.A. Museum, Scarab Club, and Detroit Institute of Arts. Ourpieces have been on exhibit in museums and sale stages.
