Originally inspired by the acclaimed Pokemon animated television special "Mewtwo Returns", this Japanese manga brings one of the franchise's most emotional stories into comic form. The story continues after the events of the original Pokemon movie, "Mewtwo Strikes Back", exploring the fate of Mewtwo and the cloned Pokemon who escaped to begin a new life. Seeking peace and isolation, Mewtwo and the cloned Pokemon settle at Mount Quena, where Mewtwo continues to struggle with profound questions about identity, existence, and the meaning of life. However, their peaceful existence is threatened when Giovanni and Team Rocket return, determined to recapture the powerful Legendary Pokemon. As Ash Ketchum and his friends become involved, Mewtwo must confront both its past and the future it wishes to protect.

✦ Story Highlights & Collector Appeal

Mewtwo's Search for Identity: An emotional exploration of what it means to be alive, with Mewtwo questioning its origins as an artificially created Pokemon. The Return of Giovanni: Team Rocket's leader returns with his ambitions to control Mewtwo's extraordinary powers. The Cloned Pokemon: Mewtwo seeks to protect the Pokemon who share its unusual origins and struggle for acceptance. Ash and Pikachu: Familiar characters return in a story closely connected to the original animated Pokemon movie. A Legendary Pokemon Story: The manga presents a memorable continuation of one of the earliest and most beloved storylines in Pokemon history.

✦ A Special Manga Adaptation from 2019

The original Mewtwo Returns animated television special aired in Japan in December 2000, continuing the story of the Legendary Pokemon following its appearance in the first Pokemon theatrical movie. In 2019, the story received a manga adaptation illustrated by Machito Gomi, with the original screenplay credited to Takeshi Shudo. The adaptation was featured through CoroCoro publications and online serialization before being collected in this Japanese manga edition, released on July 12, 2019. Its publication coincided with the Japanese theatrical release of Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution, introducing the classic Mewtwo storyline to a new generation of Pokemon fans. The 2019 publication was also promoted alongside a special revival of Pokemon Stamp collectibles, commemorating a nostalgic part of Japanese Pokemon merchandise history.

✦ Why This First Printing Is Special

This is an original Japanese first printing from 2019, not a later reprint. Its distinctive red cover features Mewtwo, one of the most recognizable Legendary Pokemon from the first generation of the franchise. The combination of a BGS 9.4 overall grade, a separately evaluated 9.2 dust jacket, WHITE page quality, and the original obi makes this a compelling collectible for fans seeking professionally graded Japanese Pokemon manga. The manga also holds special nostalgic appeal as an adaptation of a classic animated story originally broadcast nearly two decades before its collected publication.
