On October 3, 1935, Fascist Italy under dictator Benito Mussolini launched an unprovoked, full-scale invasion of Ethiopia (then widely known as Abyssinia). The invasion was a war of colonial conquest aimed at avenging a humiliating Italian defeat in 1896 and expanding the Italian Empire in Africa.

The Invasion

• The Spark: Mussolini used a border skirmish that occurred in December 1934 at the Wal Wal oasis (inside Ethiopian territory) as a pretext for war.
  
• The Advance: On October 3, 1935, over a quarter-million Italian troops crossed into Ethiopia from neighboring Italian colonies (Eritrea and Italian Somaliland).
  
• The Tactics: Heavily outgunned and poorly armed, the Ethiopian forces were devastated by Italy’s use of modern weaponry, including aerial bombings and banned chemical weapons like mustard gas.

Global Response and the League of Nations

• Appeals for Help: Emperor Haile Selassie I appealed directly to the League of Nations for collective security and assistance against the aggressor.
  
• International Failure: Though the League of Nations condemned the invasion and voted to impose limited economic sanctions on Italy, major powers like Britain and France deliberately avoided taking strong military action so as not to alienate Mussolini.
• Global Outrage: The invasion sparked massive outrage and widespread protests in the Black diaspora across the world, notably in cities like New York.

Aftermath and Historical Significance

Despite fierce resistance, the Ethiopian military was ultimately overpowered, allowing Italian forces to capture the capital of Addis Ababa in May 1936. Italy formally annexed the country, forcing the Emperor into exile. Historians widely view this conflict as a major prelude to World War II, as it completely discredited the League of Nations and proved that global powers could not—or would not—stop fascist aggression.
