The connection between Scandinavia and Greenland goes back to the hardy Vikings who made voyages to North America by way of Greenland 500 years before Columbus. The modern colonization of Greenland dates back to 1721 with the arrival of the Danish missionary, Hans Egede. Egede must have been persuasive because today the total population of about 25,000 belong to the National Lutheran Church of Denmark. The Greenlanders are largely descended from Eskimos who probably migrated from North America. The common language is still Eskimo, although Danish is also now being taught in the schools.
