1929Brough Superior SS100

George Brough was a special kind of man who made a special kind of motorcycle. Originally employed in his fathers motorcycle factory, he left to form his own company, naming the product Brough Superior.
He built his machines largely from proprietary components (Sturmey-Archer gearboxes, JAP, Matchless and MAG motors) but exerted enormous pressure on those suppliers to make his orders a little better, with closer tolerances and better workmanship. Such were his powers of persuasion that they always succumbed.
Of the 280-odd OHV V-twin JAP motors produced, only 20 were \"Pendines\" named after Pendine Sands, the sprint venue. These were true racing motors.
More a projectile than a motorcycle, the entire thing weighed only 320 pounds and was capable of astonishing speeds. Heroes of the time, Eric Fernihough and Noel Pope, put in some remarkable performances such as a 1935 Brooklands lap record of 123.58 mph, unsupercharged, and a 1936 supercharged run of 163.82 mph for the flying mile. This was raised the following year to 169.79 mph. Noel Pope also holds the outright lap record at Brooklands with 124.51 mph on a Brough.
Despite the awesome power, the Brough was renowned for its superb handling and the strength of its frame.
It is extremely hard to restore a Brough perfectly, for all parts are similarly numbered from the tank down and any replacements reflect their presence with glaringly irregular digits.
Thisbike has the Brough version of the Harley Davidson front forks, which were immensely strong but regrettably coupled to a whimpering front brake!
