The heavy artillery piece shown mounted on a formidable wooden siege carriage is a massive 9-Inch Dahlgren Smoothbore Shell Gun. Crucially, this specific card boasts a spectacular detail highly prized by elite ephemera archives: the original white stenciled military marking clearly reading "Capt. Gotham Harper's Ferry" across the face of the wooden gun carriage assembly.This refers directly to Captain John A. Gotham of the 5th New York Heavy Artillery. Capt. Gotham's heavy artillery crew was famously tasked with the grueling engineering feat of dragging these massive 9,000-pound iron naval guns up the punishing, 1,000-foot rocky vertical face of the mountain to fortify the battery. Heavy equipment and carriages were stenciled with the commanding officer's name for logistical tracking, inventory control, and battlefield deployment. • Photographic Prints: Outstanding clarity, rich sepia/albumen tonal depth, and sharp contrast. The white "Capt. Gotham" stencil markings on the carriage remain highly legible. No fading, heavy foxing, silvering, or destructive surface wear.
