CIVIL WAR 1862 HARPERS FERRY ANTHONY 2169 CAPT GOTHAM DAHLGREN CANNON STEREOVIEW

1862 Civil War Stereoview: Anthony's War Views No. 2169

"Earth Entrenchments and Cannon, Maryland Heights, Harpers Ferry"

Elite Investment-Grade Variant Featuring White Stenciled Identification: "Capt. Gotham Harper's Ferry"

Up for sale is an exceptional, museum-grade piece of American photographic history. This is a definitive, 100% original 1860s Civil War stereoview published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. from their legendary emporium at 501 Broadway, New York. This specific card is a high-contrast example from their highly coveted "War Views" series.

ITEM SPECIFICS:

  • Series: Anthony's War Views
  • Card Number: No. 2169
  • Title: Earth Entrenchments and Cannon, Maryland Heights, Harpers Ferry
  • Era: American Civil War (Circa Fall 1862 Campaign)
  • Publisher: E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., 501 Broadway, New-York
  • Mount Type: Original, period-correct 1860s Yellow/Orange flat cardstock mount
  • Label Status: 100% complete, original printed descriptive paper paste-on label intact on reverse

EXTRAORDINARY HISTORIC PROVENANCE (CAPT. GOTHAM STENCIL):

This view captures an up-close look at the raw dirt earthworks of the famous "Naval Battery" erected on the rugged summit of Maryland Heights—the highest eminence commanding the strategic military chokepoint of Harper's Ferry.

The heavy artillery piece shown mounted on a formidable wooden siege carriage is a massive 9-Inch Dahlgren Smoothbore Shell Gun. Crucially, this specific card boasts a spectacular detail highly prized by elite ephemera archives: the original white stenciled military marking clearly reading "Capt. Gotham Harper's Ferry" across the face of the wooden gun carriage assembly. This refers directly to Captain John A. Gotham of the 5th New York Heavy Artillery. Capt. Gotham's heavy artillery crew was famously tasked with the grueling engineering feat of dragging these massive 9,000-pound iron naval guns up the punishing, 1,000-foot rocky vertical face of the mountain to fortify the battery. Heavy equipment and carriages were stenciled with the commanding officer's name for logistical tracking, inventory control, and battlefield deployment. An original Anthony view with such stark, readable unit/officer stenciling on a field weapon is an absolute rarity.

CONDITION REPORT (Graded Very Fine / VF):

This card has been remarkably well-preserved over the last 163+ years and is collector-ready:

  • Surface Note:There is a small sliver of paper fiber currently resting on the front surface of the right image on the right most soldier's knee. It is loosely attached and could easily be removed by the buyer if desired, which would reveal the completely untouched photographic surface underneath.
  • Photographic Prints: Outstanding clarity, rich sepia/albumen tonal depth, and sharp contrast. The white "Capt. Gotham" stencil markings on the carriage remain highly legible. No fading, heavy foxing, silvering, or destructive surface wear.
  • Card Mount: Rigid and almost completely flat with excellent structural integrity. Edges are clean and corners show some minimal handling wear.
  • Descriptive Label: The original printed catalog label on the reverse side is fully intact, firmly adhered, and entirely legible.

SHIPPING & SPECIAL HANDLING:

To protect your investment, this premium historic photograph will be packed enclosed in a waterproof sleeve, and shipped inside a secure box.
