Brothers George and James Elliott, sons of Colt Armory artificer George Elliott, Sr both enlisted for the War in 1861 and saw 3 years of action with the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery, from the 1862 Richmond Campaign & Frederickburg to Petersburg, Virginia. An Original Civil War Union Army Pass issued at Fort Scott, Virginia, October 10, 1863 Corporal James P Elliott, Company I permitting him "to be absent until retreat today" , the pass "not good for Alexandria or outside the limits of 3rd Brigade defenses South of the Potomac". The Pass is approved by Lt Colonel Nelson L White, 1st Conn Arty as Battalion Commander, and by 2nd LT Robert A Sedgwick, as Company Commander.
