Colonel Alexander S Diven was commissioned into the 107th New York as Lt Colonel, and ended the War in 1865 as Brevet Brigadier General. Before the War he was active in building the Railroad along the Missouri River to Jefferson City. railroads and in opposition to the Kansas/Nebraska Act. Some of his letters are published online indicating he was active in railroad building with his partner, Missouri Governor and future Confederate General Sterling Price. An Original New Years Day 1860 Letter from Diven at Jefferson City (Misouri) to his son John answering his son's request for a description of the town, which he describes as hilly with farmed flats, the hills lined with white rock (limestone) and the corn still standing in the fields as is the custom here.He reports The River is frozen over and boys skate on the ice.
