CIVIL WAR PITTSBURG PENNSYLVANIA EMERGENCY MILITIA DISCHARGE 1864 For Sale

Confederate General Jubal Early led a massive raid on the Union forces around Washington and Maryland in mid- July 1864 forcing Union General US Grant to dispatch 2 army corps from the Virginia Campaign to Washington for it's defense. The State of Pennsylvania created the 193rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment , a 100 Day unit for emergency service in July, guarding the critical Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware and Washington Railroad and the Washington forts until the unit had served it's 100 days, November, 1864.
An original Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers Discharge issued to Lt Alexander C Montgomery, F Company, 193rd Volunteers at Pittsburgh, Pa Nov 9, 1864, for 100 days service, signed by Lt AA Harbach, 11th US Infantry. The Discharge bears an eagle illus and is also sgd by Captain James Graham, 193rd Pa. Comes w service info- Lt Montgomery who joined the 193rd Pa in July, 1864 was an experienced veteran, having served 3 years with the 136th Pennsylvania, and was wounded in action at the Battle of Fredericksburg. . The Discharge signer, General Abram A Harbach, a native of Burlington, Iowa was a notable 1st Iowa Volunteer and 11th US Infantry officer, was Wounded in Action at the Battle of Gettysburg, and rose to Brigadier General in the Regular Army postwar. 1p 8 x 11" ptd/ink. Edge wear, age stains, and folds suggest Lt Montgomery carried it in his coat pocket upon returning home. Overall Fair Condition.
