Savannah, Georgia was a strategic site for the Civil War defenses of the Georgia Coast and was heavily defended. In late December, 1864 Union General WT Sherman \'s army completed their March through Georgia by the taking of Savannah after the assault and capture of Fort McAllister. Sherman established his HQ at Savannah in late December and on January 12, 1865 established the City as HQ for the General. To avoid conflict with the General Commanding the Department of the South which had embraced Georgia, the War Department ordered that the Department of the South Department be subject to the orders of of General Sherman.
