Historic Seneca Falls, New York had a huge number of volunteers for the War in 1861. An Original Civil War Volunteers Roll for the men of Company A of the 19th New York naming 70 some volunteers, many NCOs and a Drummer Boy each listing their town or village of birth and also residence, dated April 23, 1861 naming Captain James E Ashcroft as Company Commander.. The Roster includes volunteers who are mostly from Seneca Falls, Waterloo, Cayuga etc.and nearby villages. The ptd/ink roll is on lined paper and approx 28 x 8", all on one side, with the reverse listing 3 other officers who have been named as candidates for commands. The 19th NY enlisted As a 2 year Volunteer Infantry regiment, but were soon designated an Artillery unit , causing some of the men to lead a Mutiny.in protest. The leaders were held in arrest but eventually most agreed to serve as the 3rd New York Light Artillery. The The men served mainly in North Carolina, especially the New Bern area This scarce early war muster roll is very legible despite the fact that some ofifcer spilled an entire bottle of sepia ink over much of the Roster. The Roll has a large printed logo "STATE OF NEW YORK --VOLUNTEER MILITIA INSPECTION AND MUSTER ROLL OF A COMPANY OF VOLUNTEERS". Age and ink stains, archival repairs on reverse folds, overall VG. Comes w service info for the 3rd New York Light Artillery & copies of wartime news-clippings about the unit incl their roster, movements, camp scenes, deaths and details of the protests including the large list of the men who Mutinied . Also comes with Service info for Captain James E Ashcroft of Seneca. This was part of a large collection of Captain Ashcroft's War-time papers..
