CROSSE & BLACKWELL Custom Antique KILNER BROS 4176 Imperial Quart Pickle Jar

Up for sale is a beautifully crude, hand blown, late 19th-century English made Imperial Quart pickle jar manufactured by the Kilner Brothers glassworks at the Conisbrough, Yorkshire plant.

This bottle is a crossover example for both antique glass and British food advertising collectors.

The unrecorded "4176" base number belongs to Kilner's 4000-series custom contract descriptor, which was used only for major Victorian commercial food exporters-most notably Crosse & Blackwell's chow chow condiment.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

• Size: True Imperial Quart capacity.
• Base Markings: Deeply embossed with the classic "CB/K" maker's mark, with the K centered under CB. The custom contract catalog number 4176 is stamped to the right.
• Crude Applied Drippy Lip: Features an uneven, hand-tooled double-collar applied finish with a downward "drip" line at the straight-bore neck.
• Texture & Whittling: The body has heavy "orange peel" whittle and cold mold chatter that shows beautifully in the light.*
• Internal Inclusions: Nice character, including closed gas blisters on the shoulder and seed bubbles suspended throughout the thick, aqua-tinted condition with original factory sheen and finish. This was not a dug bottle. It has no haze, cracks, chips, bruising or fleabites. The glass displays fantastic clarity with minimal surface scuffing.
