California State Route 108 highway marker.
Up for sale today is this California State Route 108 sign. Made to the exact standard used between 1934 and 1940 by the Automobile Club of Southern California and the California State Automobile Association to mark state highways in the days before the state itself provided signage.
Highway 108 is one of the major crossings of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It starts at US Highway 395 at the appropriately named Sonora Junction (between Bridgeport and Walker), and crosses the Sierras at Sonora Pass, 9624 feet high. It ends at Highway 49, at the town of—you guessed it!—Sonora.
Signs of this design have long since disappeared from the highways of California, replaced with the current-issue green signs. An original of these, complete with the CSAA logo, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. So here's your chance to get your hands on a fantastic display piece...without breaking the bank.
The sign is 11 by 12 inches, and weighs 2 lb. 12 oz.
