Offered for your consideration is an outstanding and very scarce 1928-1929 era - 11\" wide beautiful hotel china service plate made for the Daniel Boone Hotel in Charleston, West Virginia.
There is a very good chance that this service plate may have been a factory sample or a special gift for someone at the factory or a gift to someone at the hotel, as it is clearly marked on the back in cursive original writing \"Gladys\". The large backstamp for the hotel is very faint and partially readable, but still present. This plate is also in amazing condition for its age and is absolutely amazing in how it looks.

Historically, work was started on the Daniel Boone hotel in 1927, which it was officially opened in 1929.The hotel was owned by the American Hotels Co. and constructed at a then astronomical cost of 1.2 million dollars.Located downtown at 405 Capital at the intersection with Washington Street, the impressive 11-story 260-room hotel was constructed in the most beautiful Classical Revival and provided some of the finest accommodations in all of Charleston.

From the hotel’s opening and to 1967, one of the most notable persons at the hotel was it’s managing director, Roger S. Creel.Creel stayed with the hotel for many insuring its success and smooth operation.In 1936, the hotel underwent a major renovation that expanded it rooms to that of 361.Even in 1947, the hotel was still being advertised as “Charleston’s Newest and Most Modern Hotel”.The hotel also advertised their locally popular dining room and coffee shop.

In 1949, the hotel underwent another expansion bringing the number of rooms to 465.Additionally, the hotel also offered a large ballroom for receptions, conventions, and social events, as well as, 3 large parlor rooms. In this postwar era, hotels were seeing a major surge in popularity in the immediate post-war years when people were traveling, vacating, and moving all across the County.
The Daniel Boone Hotel also hosted many famous persons whom stayed at and visited the hotel, which included United States Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy. Other notable names included Jack Dempsey and even the King of Rock and Roll; Elvis Presley, who stayed there in 1975 and 1976 while performing in the city.

The hotel continued for most of the 20thCentury, but eventually was closed in 1981 after having several different owners since 1967.By February of 1986, the once grand hotel of Charleston had been renovated and converted into an office building.It once glorious name was removed and the building simply became \"405 Capitol Street\". Save for a few very rare artifacts, such as this service plate, not much of the hotel\'s history remains.

Now in regards to the hotel’s name, it was named in honor of the famous iconic American pioneer historical figure, Daniel Boone.Boone became most famous for establishing what would become the Commonwealth of Kentucky long before the United States had expanded westward beyond the original thirteen colonies.The original region originally belonged to both the Commonwealth of Virginia and to the Native American Indian Tribes, such as the Shawnee.
By 1775, Boone established the “Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains from North Carolina and Tennessee into Kentucky. There he founded the village of Boonesborough, Kentucky, one of the first English-speaking settlements west of the Appalachians. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 European people migrated to Kentucky/Virginia by following the route marked by Boone.”

Boone also served as an officer in the Revolutionary War, was later captured by the Shawnee Indian Tribe, which he became a member, released, and returned to fight.Boone was also elected to the first of his three terms in the Virginia General Assembly during the Revolutionary War, and fought in the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782. Blue Lick was one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War, coming after Lord Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in October 1781.”Boone later became a financially destitute and moved to Missouri. However, he became famous when his adventures were published while he was still alive.Boone passed in 1820 at the age of 85.

During the era that this service plate was made and used, persons arriving in Charleston to stay at the Daniel Boone would have primarily been arriving by passenger train service of either the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the New York Central Railroad, the Virginian Railway, or the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad.

This service plate would have been used in the hotel or restaurant’s dining rooms, grand ballroom, or restaurant for formal dining and would have been one of the main focal points of the table that greeted diners when they first set down. It would have either been removed by the waiter prior to the arrival of the entrees, or it could have been used as chop plate for other plates, etc., to be placed upon. But with it being as ornate and highly decorated as it is, as well as, costing a considerable amount of money to have been made, it was not meant to have direct food service.
Additionally, it would have been used in connection with the Daniel Boone Hotel silver soldered - silver plate and glassware for actual table settings. It is the heavyweight type steamship, lunch Counter, and railroad china.
Not including this possible sample - Scammell factory staff member marked plate, there are thus far three versions (with only very slight differences) of this most rarest plate that were made by the Scammell China Co. in Trenton, New Jersey, at their Lamberton Works. There may be others, as this may have also depended on the employee at Scammell that was applying the transfers when the plates were being made. One is with the American Hotels logo at the 12:00 o\'clock position and a full backstamp (as this plate is) from the American Hotels Co., one with covered wagon and horse (and a bi-plane airplane at the 3:30 position) in its place and shorter backstamp, and one with the Daniel Boone Hotel logo. Again, on the back in factory gold overglazed cursive lettering it reads Gladys and features the covered wagon at the 12:00 o\'clock position.
The front of the plate features a highly detailed image of Daniel Boone with his dog, which is from the famousAlonzo Chappel 1861 painting of Boone, which that painting is now in the art collection of the University of Chicago. This image is stunning. The outerboarder is comprised of many different logos, Native Americans, a bald eagle, the French fleur de luis, a revolutionary war ship, and American Hotels Co. logo.

It has no chips or cracks. It does have some minor staining and one hardly noticeable small line where the paint didn\'t adhered. Please study the photos and feel free ask questions.
