Chestnut Street Public School Souderton PA Postcard 1900s Halftone Print:
$19.99

This vintage postcard features a halftone print of the Chestnut Street Public School in Souderton, Pennsylvania. The image captures a substantial brick edifice with a prominent central cupola, multiple shuttered windows, and an arched main entrance, exemplifying the civic architecture common to public schools constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A group of children and adults, likely teachers or staff, are posed on the lawn in front of the building, their attire reflecting the fashion of the early 1900s. To the left, the street scene reveals an unpaved road, wooden utility poles strung with wires, and an early incandescent street light, offering a glimpse into the infrastructure of a small Bucks County town during that period. The printed text identifies the scene at bottom center, while the bottom left corner credits \"D\' - Zeigler, Souderton,\" suggesting a local photographer or retailer, and the bottom right corner notes \"Post Cards Published by C. M. Berkemeyer, Sellersville,\" indicating a regional publisher based in nearby Sellersville, also in Bucks County. The verso displays a divided back design, a format introduced in the United States in 1907, which allowed for both a message and an address on the reverse side. The top portion of the back features an elevated view of a small town, characterized by houses, trees, and a main thoroughfare or railway line, with an industrial structure and smokestack emitting smoke on the far right. The printed text includes a decorative \"Post Card\" heading in a gothic-style font and a stamp box indicating \"Domestic One Cent\" and \"Foreign Two Cents\" postage rates. These rates, combined with the divided back format, suggest a production date between 1907 and approximately 1917. A faint handwritten mark, possibly \"4-\" or a stylized letter, appears in the bottom right corner but does not convey a message or address. The card exhibits general signs of age, including toning, a light brown stain in the bottom left corner of the front, minor surface wear, and faint vertical creases in the blank message area on the back, with corners that appear slightly softened from handling.
