Child Roses Doves Birthday Greetings Postcard c1908 Edwardian Art Nouveau UPU: $9.79
A printed chromolithograph birthday greeting from the Golden Age of postcards, this example dates to the first decade of the twentieth century, circa 1905-1910, based on the versoâs multilingual âPostkarteâ and âWeltpostvereinâ headings, the use of a Benjamin Franklin one-cent stamp, and the overall stylistic conventions of the era. The front presents an idyllic, sentimental tableau: a young child, likely a boy given the period attire of a white collared shirt and dark shorts, stands at the center holding a woven basket overflowing with pink roses. Surrounding the child are three white doves, their wings slightly raised, reinforcing the symbols of peace, love, and purity. The upper corners are ornamented with stylized floral scrollwork and ribbon-like flourishes that echo the sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, while the greeting âBirthday Greetingsâ appears in a decorative serif typeface with a subtle drop shadow at the bottom center. The publisherâs catalog number â1797.â is printed in the lower right corner, a typical internal identifier for chromolithographic series of this period. The illustration retains its original vividness, with the pink of the roses and the blue of the childâs sash remaining well-saturated despite the overall paper toning. Minor wear is evident at the corners, particularly the bottom left which is slightly rounded, and a few faint vertical creases appear in the lower left quadrant below the basket. The verso bears a handwritten message in ink, reading âDear brother all I recâd Sauraâs letter this evening and will answer some time this week. We are well and busy,â offering a glimpse into the rhythms of early twentieth-century correspondence. The stamp, a 1908-1910 Washington-Franklin issue, is postmarked but the cancellation itself is indistinct, precluding precise geographic or date identification. The card was never intended as a photographic image, but rather as a commercially printed greeting, its sentimental iconography of childhood innocence and floral abundance serving as a universal expression of well-wishing. The multilingual heading block, including âBevelezÅ-lap,â âDopÃsnice,â and âTarjeta Postal,â indicates the card was designed for international distribution through the Universal Postal Union, a common practice among publishers of the era seeking to maximize market reach. This artifact stands as a representative example of the mass-produced, deeply sentimental visual culture that defined the Edwardian greeting card trade.
