Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co. Silver Coffee Pot Wallace Bro\'s
Offered for your consideration is a stunning 1905 Era bottom marked 4 1/2\" tall by 8\" wide (from the tip of the spout to the opposite far side of the handle) large steamship silver plate 2 portion (most likely 14-16 oz) coffee pot – teapot that was made for the Great Lakes steamship company of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co.
This is the first such large 2 portion size Wallace Bros. coffee pot like this that I\'ve seen made for the D&C Lines, in comparison to, International Silver and Reed & Barton producing the few others that I\'ve seen over the past several years of collecting.
This is actual silver plate that would have been used aboard one of the famous D&C Great Lake steamers. If you collect historic City of Detroit, Cleveland, or Steamship items, you might want to consider this fine piece for your collection.
Historically, the D&C had their steamship company offices headquartered waterfront at the end of Wayne Street in Detroit, Michigan. The line operated Great Lakes passenger steamers between the cities the namesake cities of Detroit and Cleveland and onto other points located on the Great Lakes. Some of these other cities included Mackinac Island, Harbor Springs, Buffalo New York, Midland Ontario, Chicago Illinois, Niagara Falls New York, St. Ignance, and Sault Ste. Marie. Some of the D&C steamers included the City of Cleveland and the City of Detroit.
This coffee pot would have seen service aboard one of the D&C Line’s Great Lakes steamers for use in the dining rooms or officer’s quarters for serving hot coffee or hot tea in the most elegant manner.Additionally, it would have been used in connection with the D&C’s steamship china and glassware.It is the heavyweight type restaurant, hotel, and railroad silver plate.
On the bottom, it shows that the teapot was made by theRogers Bros. Silver Company that was located in Hartford, Connecticut. It has the catalog number of \"305\", has the stylized \"D&C\" on the bottom, is marked \"2 POR\" (for two portions), reads \"Hotel Quality\", and also has \"COF.\" on the bottom, which stands for coffee.
The pot\'s lid and hinge have become detached from the body and this could be repaired by a jeweler, but we do not have time to take it to one. The lid still sets wonderfully onto the pot and displays very nicely. I did not even notice the lid was detached when I first saw it. There is a usage indentation on the right side (backside) directly on the Gadroon mount. The handle is firmly attached and the base sets evenly on a flat surface.
The exterior has the usual usage scratches, moderate light pitting, some silver plate loss in a few spots, some minor dings / indentations from usage, but overall, looks good. The inside is in exceptional condition for its ago. The handle and spout both have an embossed floral relief pattern that greatly enhances just how good this teapot looks.
