At the field where she ran her own flight schoolDESCRIPTIONThis vintage black and white photograph shows pioneering woman aviator Edna Gardner Whyte standing beside a high-wing, strut-braced monoplane on the grass apron at Harry Williams Airport in Patterson, Louisiana, with the airport's hangar and rooftop signage visible behind her.Whyte has boldly signed the photo in ink across the lower margin, "Edna Gardner Whyte."The location is not incidental. In 1937, Whyte and her then-husband moved their flying school from Shushan Airport in New Orleans to this field, the former home of the Wedell-Williams Air Service, renamed Harry P. Williams Memorial Airport after Williams' 1936 death, and there they renamed the operation the New Orleans Air College.Whyte trained pilots at this field until 1941, when she sold the operation to the Navy ahead of America's entry into World War II. She would go on to serve as a military instrument instructor during the war, win more than two dozen air races, serve as president of the Ninety-Nines, and, at age 67, found her own airport, Aero Valley, in Roanoke, Texas, where she flew and taught for the rest of her life.The field itself carries added weight in aviation history. Before it bore Williams' name, it was the base for the Wedell-Williams Air Service, the operation behind Jimmy Wedell's record-setting racers and one of the defining teams of Golden Age air racing, so Whyte's flight school inherited a field already steeped in that history.Whyte's own career reached well beyond this one airfield. The photo is in very good condition with strong contrast and a clean surface. There is a small area of adhesive residue and light paper loss at the top edge from prior mounting, and light corner wear consistent with age and handling. The ink signature is bold, clear, and fully legible with no fading or smudging. The reverse is blank aside from the printed Kodak paper watermark, with no writing or stamps.
